About this trip

There are places in this world that don't just impress you — they rewire you. The Amazon is one of them.

Few places on earth can prepare you for the sheer scale and intensity of the Peruvian Amazon — a living, breathing, impossibly dense world of sound and color and life, sitting just miles from the Brazilian border. Caimans lurk along the riverbanks. Howler monkeys shake the canopy overhead. Giant river otters cut through glassy oxbow lakes. Somewhere out there in the undergrowth, jaguars and anacondas are doing exactly what they've been doing for millions of years. You feel it the moment you step off the boat. This is not a zoo. This is not a nature documentary. This is the real thing — and it is extraordinary.

This 3-day, 2-night post-trip extension takes you from Cusco deep into the Tambopata National Reserve — one of the most biodiverse corners of the planet — where you'll stay in a rustic-luxury cabaña at the stunning Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion eco-lodge, set within Peru's first ever private ecological reserve. Days are spent exploring jungle trails, paddling through mangroves on Lake Sandoval, walking canopy suspension bridges 38 meters above the forest floor, and watching the jungle transform at twilight from a diurnal world into something altogether more mysterious and alive.

Your flight from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado is included as part of your main Peru tour package. From there, everything — accommodation, all meals, guided excursions, and transfers to and from the lodge — is taken care of. All you have to do is show up and let the jungle do the rest.

You have to experience the Amazon at least once. This is your chance.

Tour Highlights

  • Boat Ride into the Heart of the Jungle – Your Amazon adventure begins the moment you board a motorized wooden boat on the Madre de Dios River for a 45-minute journey deep into the rainforest. Hugging the meandering riverbanks, watching the jungle close in around you, you'll know immediately that you've arrived somewhere completely unlike anywhere else.

  • Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion Eco-Lodge – Home for the next two nights is a stunning rustic-luxury cabaña set within Peru's first ever private ecological reserve, established in 1975. Palm-thatched, beautifully designed, and surrounded entirely by rainforest — this is what it looks like when wilderness and comfort find the perfect balance.

  • Lake Sandoval & Giant River Otters – Paddle a dugout wooden canoe through mangroves and glide onto the glassy, oxbow waters of Lake Sandoval, deep inside the protected Tambopata National Reserve. This serene and extraordinary lake is home to the endangered giant river otter, red howler monkeys, anacondas, red-bellied macaws, side-neck turtles, and black caimans. Bring your camera.

  • Canopy Walkway & Anaconda Walk – Navigate 344 meters of hanging suspension bridges strung between eight treetop observation platforms, 38 meters above the forest floor — one of the most exhilarating ways to experience the scale and density of the Amazon canopy. Then descend to the Anaconda Walk, a raised wooden platform winding through the flooded aguajales swamp where amphibians, birds, mammals, and yes, potentially snakes, await.

  • Twilight River Excursion – As the jungle transitions from day to night, board a boat for a gentle river excursion to witness one of nature's most remarkable daily transformations. Nightjars, owls, capybaras, and caimans emerge from the shadows as the sun goes down — a quiet, cinematic, genuinely unforgettable way to end the day.

  • World-Class Biodiversity, Expert-Guided – With 540 bird species inventoried on the lodge grounds alone, and the surrounding reserve teeming with mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects found nowhere else on earth, every walk, paddle, and boat ride here is guided by specialized naturalist experts who bring the extraordinary complexity of this ecosystem to life at every turn.

FAQ

  • How Do I Get to Puerto Maldonado? Your flight from Cusco (CUZ) to Puerto Maldonado (PEM) is included as part of your main Peru tour package. Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado — coined the Capital of Biodiversity — you'll be met by your local guide and transferred by road to the river pier, where your Amazon adventure begins with a 45-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to the lodge.

  • When Does the Extension Begin and End? The extension runs from July 18th–20th, 2027. It begins upon your arrival in Puerto Maldonado on July 18th and concludes on the morning of July 20th with checkout from the lodge and transfer back to the airport. Your return flight from Puerto Maldonado (PEM) to Lima or your next destination is not included and will need to be booked separately.

  • What About the Luggage Restriction? Due to weight and space limitations on the river boat, luggage is limited to 10kg (22 lbs.) per person for the journey to the lodge. We recommend packing a small bag with just your essentials for the three days — comfortable lightweight clothing, insect repellent, sunscreen, and your camera. Your remaining luggage will be stored safely at a facility in Puerto Maldonado and will be waiting for you when you return on July 20th.

  • Do I Need Any Vaccinations? The US Travel Advisory for Peru recommends yellow fever shots and malaria-preventive medication for travelers visiting rainforest regions. We strongly recommend consulting your doctor at least one month before your trip to discuss your options and get any necessary vaccinations in time. It's also worth noting that no cases of yellow fever or malaria have ever been reported on the Inkaterra properties — but preparation is always the right call when visiting the Amazon Basin.

  • Is There Cell Service at the Lodge? There is limited telephone access and no mobile phone coverage at Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion. In case of emergency, the Guest Service team can contact the office in town via radio. We recommend letting family and friends know in advance that you'll be off the grid for a couple of days — honestly, that's part of the magic.

  • What Is The Cancellation Policy? If you need to cancel after confirmation, you'll receive a Credit Voucher to be applied to a new trip within 1 year of cancellation, for the 25% deposit amount paid (minus a $100 cancellation fee). After the 90-day mark before the trip, all payments become non-refundable, since hotels, transportation, and activities have already been paid for. Any exceptions at that point are at the discretion of our local partners. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance — it really is worth it.
